WAEPA

WAEPA, a major benefits provider for federal employees, was undergoing a significant refresh of their digital presence. I joined the project as part of a larger development team, with a focus on building new functionality, creating reusable layouts, and expanding the design system within a modern WordPress environment.

Expanding a Hybrid ACF + Gutenberg Workflow

The site uses a hybrid approach with Gutenberg blocks and ACF-powered components, giving the internal team a strong balance between structured content and visual editorial flexibility. My contributions centered on extending this system by:

  • Developing custom Gutenberg blocks aligned with the new design direction
  • Creating ACF-based components for more structured or data-driven content
  • Ensuring all new pieces fit seamlessly into their page-building workflow

This allowed WAEPA’s marketing and content teams to build pages faster and maintain consistency across the site.

New Layouts, UI Patterns & Interactions

I introduced a number of new layouts and visual components that improved storytelling and clarity across the site. This included updated hero variations, card layouts, flexible content sections, and other modular patterns designed to be dropped into any page without additional development.

Collaborative Feature Development

Working alongside the core development team, I helped refine existing features, extend functionality, and enhance overall user experience. This included support for member-focused sections, benefit explanations, and clearer conversion-driven pathways.

This project highlights my ability to step into an active modern WordPress codebase, contribute meaningful improvements, and build polished, reusable components that elevate both the editorial workflow and the user-facing experience.
